Mac Os Software Raid 5
Hey there kobe259,

Aug 13, 2018 So far as drives connected to SATA ports on the mobo, then yes, software RAID is what you get. OTOH, if you purchase a PCIe RAID controller card, connect as many drives as the controller will take (or you have on hand) and RAID them with the controller card firmware, then Mac OS will recognize that as a valid drive. I have been using RAID on Macs and PCs since 1999, and I have done it in software and 7-8 different kinds cards on various OSes. I will tell you two reasons why I won't use software RAID anymore: first, if a drive has an issue and doesn't mount as expected, it will break the RAID volume, and correcting the issue takes more time and is prone to mistakes; secondly, RAID on software uses.
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities. I understand you want to know if you can install macOS Catalina on an Apple RAID disk. I’ll be happy to help with this.
As long as your Mac meets the compatibility requirements, you should be able to upgrade to macOS Catalina. Take a look at this link for info on which computers are compatible and how to upgrade:

If your Mac meets the requirements and you run into any issues upgrading, be sure to reach back out.
