Apps Using Printer Freeze On Mac
try an SMC reset but first try these:
Before Resetting the SMC

- To prevent freezing and crashing of Microsoft Office apps on your Mac, upgrade to macOS 10.13 High Sierra and update Office to version 15.38 or later. If you are using earlier MS Office and Mac OS X versions, you may experience Word, Excel, an Outlook freeze-ups, and crashes.
- Mar 07, 2013 This one user, including her various PDF writers, One Note, SnagIt, etc has 24 printers, and when trying to print her application is freezing up, but others with less printers don't have a problem. When I removed all the printers except the one she wanted to print to, as a test she could print fine.
- To enter repair mode, start the Mac, then immediately press cmd-R. You can release the keys when you see the Apple. After that, accessing the printer preferences still shows the spinning wheel, but be patient, after a long while (about 3-4 minutes in my case) the printer preferences should eventually get loaded.
- If you try all those things and continue to have crashes or freezes, contact the app’s developer (if it’s a single app) or Apple (if the problem is system-wide) for further advice and assistance.
- Nov 23, 2015 Re: printer randomly freezes The only time mine has frozen was when the computer went to sleep (I didn't touch the computer for 10 minutes). I downloaded the app 'caffeine' which keeps my mac from going to sleep and it has worked perfectly since.
Mar 20, 2018 I spent 4 hours on the phone on Tuesday trying to fix the constant freezing of Quickbooks. I loaded a QuickBooks Tool Hub and ran a diagnostic. I created a Portable file for both Sports and Surfaces and set everyone’s pathway up after the phone call. I have hired outside support to try to fix this. It is still freezing!
Try each of the following steps in this order before you reset the SMC. Test the issue after completing each troubleshooting step to determine if the issue still occurs.
- Press Command + Option + Escape to force quit any application that is not responding.
- Put your Mac to sleep by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Sleep. Wake the computer after it has gone to sleep.
- Restart your Mac by by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosingRestart.
- Shut down your Mac by by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Shut Down.
If your Mac appears to be running normally but isn't responding, force the computer to shut down by pressing and holding the power button for 10 seconds. Note: You will lose any unsaved work in any open applications. For Mac portables experiencing issues related to the MagSafe power adapter and/or battery, try:
- Unplug the MagSafe power adapter from the Mac and the wall power socket for several seconds.
- Shutdown the Mac. Physically remove and re-insert the battery (if it's removable) and startup the Mac.
If the issue is still not resolved after following the troubleshooting items above, an SMC reset may be necessary.
